Akin ("Akin," "we," "us," or "our") makes a mobile application (the "App") that helps you stay connected with the people who matter to you. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.
We built Akin to be private by design. The App contains no third-party analytics, no advertising, and no tracking software. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to track you across other apps or websites.
If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at privacy@useakin.com.
This policy applies to anyone who uses the Akin App. By using the App, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.
We only collect the information needed to make the App work:
Information you provide: account information from Sign in with Apple (an account identifier and, if you choose to share it, your name and email); the people you add (names, relationship labels, optional notes or context, important dates, and any contact details you choose to add); your entries (journal entries, recorded moments, life events, moods, and check-in history); and voice notes, which are transcribed into text so they can be saved.
Information collected automatically: a user identifier used to associate your data with your account and keep it private to you. We do not collect advertising identifiers (IDFA), and the App does not request permission to track you.
Information from your device (only with your permission): Contacts (to let you pick someone from your device's contact list, and to look up a phone number for a person you've already added so you can reach them — Akin never reads your entire address book), Microphone & Speech Recognition (to record and transcribe voice notes), Calendar (to show meeting briefs and add follow-up reminders you request), and Face ID (to lock and protect your journal on your device). Phone numbers, emails, and photos pulled from your device contacts stay on your device and are never sent to our servers. You can change or revoke these permissions at any time in your device settings.
We use your information to provide the core features of the App, to generate personalized suggestions such as "Why Now" context and draft messages using artificial intelligence (see Section 5), to maintain and secure your account, to respond to your support requests, and to comply with legal obligations. We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
We share information only with the service providers needed to run the App, each of which processes data on our behalf:
Supabase — our backend provider, where your account data and the content you create are stored so the App can save and sync your information. This is the only server the App sends your data to directly.
RevenueCat — our subscription management provider. When you purchase or restore a subscription, RevenueCat processes your subscription status and transaction details, associated with your account identifier, so we can confirm and maintain your Pro access. RevenueCat works alongside Apple, which handles the actual payment; it does not receive your payment card details.
Anthropic (Claude) and OpenAI — our AI providers. To generate suggestions like "Why Now" context and draft messages, relevant content (such as the context and entries associated with a person) is sent for AI processing through our secure server. We use Anthropic first and OpenAI as a fallback if Anthropic is unavailable. We also use OpenAI to index your journal entries and searches so memory search works. This is used to produce your results and is not used to build an advertising profile of you, and these providers' API terms commit them not to train their models on the data we send.
Apple — for Sign in with Apple, in-app purchases and subscriptions, and push notifications, each processed under Apple's own privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or in connection with a business transfer. We do not share your information with advertisers, data brokers, or analytics companies, because we do not use any.
Some Akin features use AI to generate text — for example, suggesting why now might be a good moment to reach out, or drafting a message you could send. To do this, relevant information you've saved (such as a person's name, your notes about them, and recent entries) is sent to our AI providers — Anthropic, with OpenAI as a fallback — through our secure server to generate that specific output. We also send your journal entries and searches to OpenAI to create a private index that powers memory search; this happens automatically when you save an entry. We use your content to personalize and produce your results, not to serve you ads, and our providers' API terms commit them not to train their models on it. AI-generated suggestions are starting points for you to edit and use as you see fit — you are always in control of what you actually send or save.
Akin offers optional paid subscriptions. All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store, and we use RevenueCat to manage and verify your subscription status. We do not receive or store your full payment card details. Apple handles billing, renewals, refunds, and applicable taxes under Apple's terms and privacy policy. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings.
You can view and edit the people and entries you've added directly in the App, and you can delete entries, people, and other content. You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting privacy@useakin.com. You can revoke device permissions and turn off notifications at any time in your device settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) — including the right to access, correct, delete, or port your data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@useakin.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. If you delete content or your account, we delete the associated data from our systems within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain it for legal or security reasons.
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your data and to limit who can access it.
Akin is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us at privacy@useakin.com and we will delete it.
Akin is operated from the United States. If you use the App from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate, which may have different data protection laws than your country.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If we make material changes, we will provide notice through the App or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
If you have any questions, requests, or concerns about this Privacy Policy or your information, contact us at privacy@useakin.com.
